Golden Ball
1978 FIFA World Cup Argentina
Argentina
Being the host country, Argentina national team had set its mind on winning the 1978 FIFA World Cup. Rumors suggested that Peru might have been somehow illicitly induced not to try too hard (especially because the Peruvian goalkeeper, Ramón Quiroga, was born in Argentina); but nothing could be proved, and Argentina met the Netherlands in the final.
Truth be told, Argentina coached by Cesar Luis Menotti was loaded with goal scorers and celebrities like Ubaldo Fillol, Daniel Passarella, Alberto Tarantini, Américo Rubén Gallego, Osvaldo Ardiles, Mario ‘El Matador’ Kempes and Leopoldo Luque who rightfully earned his place on the final match.
Argentina had to deal with a frightful Group A: Italy, France and Hungary. Then they had to face Brazil, Poland and Peru and pass the second round.
The final, Argentina vs. Netherlands, was also controversial, but Mario Kempes certainly made a difference against the Clockwork Orange team. Grupo A
