Golden Ball
1982 Spain FIFA World Cup
Italy
The Italian national team won their third FIFA World Cup title in 1982. This tournament was marked by a series of great matches and is widely regarded as the second-best ever after the 1970 tournament.
Against all odds, the Italian team didn’t win any match during the first round and was able to pass due to goal difference. Italian journalists and tifosi criticized their team for their uninspired performances that managed three draws; the squad was reeling from the recent Serie A scandal, where national players were suspended for match fixing and illegal betting. However, Paolo Rossi -awarded with the Golden Boot from Adidas- didn’t score any goal until his fifth match.
Italy defeated West Germany 3-1 on the final match and Juan Carlos I of Spanish delivered the trophy to Rossi, the 40-yeard-old captain Dinno Zoff, Collovati, Bergomi, Cabrini and Coach Enzo Bearzot – among other Italian representatives. Grupo A
