FIFA World Cup 1958
Brazil
The sixth staging of the FIFA World Cup -was hosted by Sweden from 8 June to 29 June, 1958, saw the birth of the current five times champions Brazil, who beat Sweden 5-2 in the final for their first title. The World Cup marked the debut on the world stage of a precocious unknown 17-year-old named Pelé, who would be known as “King Pelé”. Even though Brazil reached the World Cup final match without too much trouble and even hammered Sweden 5-2, they had to face the French top goal scorer Just Fontaine, who had scored 13 goals and remains the FIFA World Cup top goal scorer. However, it was not enough to prevent Brazil thundering into the Final as a Pelé hat-trick gave them a 5-2 victory. Brazil had some other football stars including Vava, Mane Garrincha, Didí and of course, but of course the newborn King Pelé clearly made the difference.
