1986 FIFA World Cup Mexico
Mexico 1986
For the second time, the 13th staging of the FIFA World Cup, was held in Mexico from 31 May to 29 June, 1986. In this World Cup, the “Mexican wave” was born. Whatever its origin, by the mid-1980s the practice was widespread throughout North America. Finally, it gained worldwide notice, and the specific name Mexican wave, during the FIFA Football World Cup in Mexico at the Estadio Universitario in Monterrey, 1986. A severe earthquake in September 1985, eight months before the tournament, cast doubt over Mexico's ability to organize the event. However, the stadiums were not affected and “Mexico was on its feet” to host the competition. The format of the competition changed from 1982: 24 teams qualified, divided into six groups of four. The top two teams and the four best third place finishers from the six groups advanced to the knockout round of 16 teams. The final match was played at Azteca stadium in Mexico City, where 114.600 fans assisted the match and Argentina claimed their second title after beating Germany 3-2.
