South Africa 2010 Venues
Africa was chosen as the host for the 2010 World Cup as part of a new policy to rotate the event between football confederations. After one round of voting, the winning bid was announced by FIFA president Sepp Blatter at a media conference on 2004 in Zürich. South Africa was awarded the rights to host the tournament, defeating Morocco and Egypt. South Africa is working on the preparations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup which will be receiving 450.000 visitors.
In 2005, the organizers released a provisional list of thirteen venues to be used for the World Cup but This was narrowed down to ten venues -located in 9 cities- which were officially announced by FIFA on 17 March 2006. The stadiums will be located in: Bloemfontein, Cape City, Durban, Johannesburg (2 venues), Nelspruit, Polokwane, Port Elizabeth, Pretoria and Rustenburg. Five new stadiums are to be built for the tournament (three new match venues and two new practice grounds), and five of the existing venues are to be upgraded.
2010 is just around the corner and South Africa´s capabilities to finish the constructions of the stadiums were called into question. Nevertheless, all issues –including a massive strike on behalf of the workers- were resolved and the stadia for the 2010 World Cup are ready to kickoff.
